{"id":12179,"date":"2012-03-08T15:34:46","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T15:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12179"},"modified":"2012-03-08T15:34:46","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T15:34:46","slug":"windows-server-8-microsoft-online-backup-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12179","title":{"rendered":"Windows Server 8: Microsoft Online Backup Service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What?\u00a0 You\u2019re kidding, right?\u00a0 Nope: Microsoft is adding online backup to Windows Server 8.\u00a0 From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/download\/en\/details.aspx?id=29005&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MicrosoftDownloadCenter+%28Microsoft+Download+Center%29#tm\" target=\"_blank\">guide<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Microsoft Online Backup Service is an installable service for Windows Server &#8220;8&#8221; Beta, which allows for file and folder backups to the cloud service<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s basically an offsite backup solution to the cloud using a Microsoft Online Backup Service Agent.\u00a0 It provides:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026 file and folder backup capabilities for Windows Server &#8220;8&#8221; Beta computers<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #181818; color: #cccccc;\">It cannot backup system state.\u00a0 That\u2019s OK.\u00a0 I\u2019ve worked in in online backup and when people backup everything and see the first invoice for space consumed, well, they quickly decide that business data backup\/recovery will be enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #181818; color: #999999;\"><span style=\"color: #cccccc;\">Access to Microsoft Online Backup Service is limited at first to successful <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.microsoft.com\/onlinebackup\" target=\"_blank\">applicants<\/a>.\u00a0 The installation<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026 is a two-part process, which requires the creation of an online Microsoft Online Services account (not required for BETA since ids are pre-provisioned) and installation of the client components (agent) for the Microsoft Online Backup Service feature. The Microsoft Online Backup Service Agent installer download is located on the Microsoft Connect Site<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #181818; color: #cccccc;\">The backup can be configured via Computer Management or via PowerShell cmdlets:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image_thumb6.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"504\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Data is encrypted using a passphrase of your choosing or auto generated (minimum of 16 characters).
