{"id":12119,"date":"2012-03-04T13:30:16","date_gmt":"2012-03-04T13:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12119"},"modified":"2012-03-04T13:30:16","modified_gmt":"2012-03-04T13:30:16","slug":"setting-up-windows-8-windows-to-go-on-usb-3-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=12119","title":{"rendered":"Setting Up Windows 8 Windows To Go on USB 3.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Windows 8 includes support for a new mobile \u201cdevice\u201d function called Windows To Go.\u00a0 The idea is that you can install Windows 8 Enterprise on a supported USB 3.0 removable storage device, such as the Kingston DT Ultimate G2 32 GB that I have.\u00a0 This means that you can have a working installation of Windows 8 that you can theoretically take around with you, plug into machines with a USB 3.0 port, and boot them up into your mobile workspace.<\/p>\n<p><em>NOTE! The Kingston DT Ultimate G2 is not supported by Windows To Go.\u00a0 It worked back in the beta days, but no longer.\u00a0 You have to be very precise about what you purchase: <a href=\"http:\/\/legacy.kingston.com\/wtg\/\">http:\/\/legacy.kingston.com\/wtg\/<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note that the two supported device ranges (restricted because of performance) at this point (post updated on 13\/June\/2012) are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kingston DT Ultimate: luckily the one I bought, and the range we&#8217;re distributors for at work \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>SuperTalent RC8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I set up my stick so I could boot my Ultrabook up into Windows 8.\u00a0 It\u2019s configured with Windows 7, and the 128 GB SSD is not big enough to dual boot.\u00a0 It\u2019s my primary machine at home so I didn\u2019t want to put a beta on the internal drive.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how I set it up.\u00a0 C: is my laptop\u2019s internal drive, and E: is my USB 3.0 stick.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I got a copy of ImageX and BCDBoot from the latest version of WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit).<\/li>\n<li>I copied install.wim from the sources folder of the Windows 8 ISO.<\/li>\n<li>I put all my files in C:Source<\/li>\n<li>I inserted the USB 3.0 drive (E:)<\/li>\n<li>Run <em>DiskPart<\/em> from an elevated command prompt<\/li>\n<li>Run <em>List Disk<\/em>.\u00a0 Identify the USB drive.<\/li>\n<li>Type <em>Select Disk X<\/em> where X is the number of the identified USB drive<\/li>\n<li>Run <em>Clean<\/em> if you are sure you have selected the USB drive.\u00a0 This will erase it.<\/li>\n<li>Now type <em>Create Partition Primary<\/em> to create a partition.<\/li>\n<li><em>Format fs=ntfs quick<\/em> will quick format the new partition.<\/li>\n<li><em>Active<\/em> will mark it for boot<\/li>\n<li>Type <em>Exit<\/em> to quit DiskPart<\/li>\n<li>Now I ran <em>C:sourceimagex.exe \/apply C:sourceinstall.wim 1 e: <\/em>to install Windows 8 from install.wim to the USB 3.0 drive<\/li>\n<li>Running <em>Bcdboot.exe e:windows \/s e:<\/em> will configure the USB 3.0 to boot Windows 8<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now you have a generalised USB 3.0 stick.\u00a0 You can pop it into your USB 3.0 port, boot from it, and Bob\u2019s your uncle!<\/p>\n<p>Quick note: I had tried this with the developer preview of Windows 8 but it refused to boot from my ultrabook (inacessible boot device Sad Face Of Death).\u00a0 I did configure my BIOS to do a UEFI boot \u2013 this might be required and I haven\u2019t tried booting without it.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re mass producing sticks then you might want to look at injecting drivers, etc, into the install.wim file to reduce specialisation when you deploy the sticks.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of performance, obviously it is not as fast as the SSD in my machine.\u00a0 But it isn\u2019t bad at all.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:df750907-33d8-4787-8242-ed09607135d3\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"margin: 0px;
