{"id":11991,"date":"2012-01-09T12:21:59","date_gmt":"2012-01-09T12:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11991"},"modified":"2012-01-09T12:21:59","modified_gmt":"2012-01-09T12:21:59","slug":"idc-2012-will-be-vmwares-last-year-as-king-of-the-hill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11991","title":{"rendered":"IDC &#8211; 2012 Will Be VMware&#8217;s Last Year as King of the Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Take a look at the new <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11979\" target=\"_blank\">features<\/a> of Windows Server 8 Hyper-V.&#160; Now consider that these (and all of Hyper-V) are all built into your VM licensing and you don\u2019t actually have to pay for them.&#160; Buying VMware is an additional cost.<\/p>\n<p>IDC released their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/research\/viewtoc.jsp?containerId=231593\" target=\"_blank\">predictions<\/a> for 2012 and #3 is:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>2012 Will Be VMware&#8217;s Last Year as King of the Hill<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To be fair, IDC has also previously claimed that Windows Phone would grab the #2 spot in the market, ahead of Apple *ahem*<\/p>\n<p>But this is different.&#160; Hyper-V right now beats VMware on price, and when you try to reduce VMware pricing, 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V beats VMware on functionality.&#160; Windows Server 8 changes that field by dealing with the objections and by doing stuff that VMware doesn\u2019t. And don\u2019t forget that System Center (current and future) smack VMware\u2019s \u201cmanagement\u201d products around like a one-legged little person in a heavyweight MMA fight.<\/p>\n<p>Queue the wailing and gnashing of teeth.
