{"id":11719,"date":"2011-09-15T13:52:04","date_gmt":"2011-09-15T12:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11719"},"modified":"2011-09-15T13:52:04","modified_gmt":"2011-09-15T12:52:04","slug":"refresh-or-reset-windows-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11719","title":{"rendered":"Refresh or Reset Windows 8"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stuff happens.&#160; Sometimes you install a dodgy piece of software.&#160; Sometimes the cumulative effect of lots of installs messes up the PC.&#160; Sometimes you\u2019re running a pre-beta developer preview release of an operating system and it breaks.&#160; And that\u2019s when some new features in Windows 8 come in handy.<\/p>\n<p>In Control Panel, under General, you can find two useful features:<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Refresh Your PC<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will allow you to undo changes to your PC back to the Windows defaults without affecting your data or files.&#160; I did this yesterday on my Microsoft Build Samsung slate PC when the gyroscope functionality broke.&#160; It took around 5 minutes, and I got a \u201cnew\u201d operating system that remembered who I was and retained my limited amount of data (in My Pictures).&#160; <\/p>\n<p>A application report is posted on the desktop.&#160; This details the applications that were uninstalled, and in my experience, it gave me URLs to download the software again.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Reset Your PC<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You might want to sell your Windows 8 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/Samsung-Microsoft-Windows-Build-Developer-Tablet-PC-Accessories-\/290609946343?pt=Laptops_Nov05&amp;hash=item43a9b3dee7\" target=\"_blank\">PC on Ebay<\/a>.&#160; You can reset the operating system without any media by hitting this option.&#160; It will restore the entire OS to factory defaults, wiping all of your data (allegedly).&#160; <\/p>\n<p>EDIT:<\/p>\n<p>I did a reset a few minutes ago to see how it would work.&#160; It worked as advertised; the PC was reset to the original installation and all my data and settings were gone.&#160; It took around 5 minutes to reset, and maybe another 5 to do the mini-setup wizard.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:8e550f11-d2aa-4f90-915e-90c3b0d0abf5\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+8\" rel=\"tag\">Windows 8<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stuff happens.&#160; Sometimes you install a dodgy piece of software.&#160; Sometimes the cumulative effect of lots of installs messes up the PC.&#160; Sometimes you\u2019re running a pre-beta developer preview release of an operating system and it breaks.&#160; And that\u2019s when some new features in Windows 8 come in handy.
