{"id":11622,"date":"2011-09-14T14:11:44","date_gmt":"2011-09-14T13:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11622"},"modified":"2011-09-14T14:11:44","modified_gmt":"2011-09-14T13:11:44","slug":"create-a-shutdown-tile-in-windows-8-metro-ui-start-screen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11622","title":{"rendered":"Create a Shutdown Tile in Windows 8 Metro UI Start Screen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bit of an annoyance in the Windows 8 Developer Preview release is the lack of a quick shutdown tile.&#160; Yes, you can go to command prompt and run the <em>shutdown<\/em> command but that\u2019s not exactly user friendly.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s my tested fix to add a Shutdown tile to the Metro UI.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a shortcut called Shutdown that runs the command <em>C:windowssystem32shutdown \/s \/t 0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Move this shortcut into <em>C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms<\/em> (the location of the start menu).&#160; Anything in here can be pinned to the Start Screen.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the Start Screen, and into the Search charm.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t search; browse through the tiles and find your Shutdown shortcut, now visible as a tile.<\/li>\n<li>Select it (you tug it down slightly), and select pin from the bar in the bottom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now you have a working Shutdown tile that will shut down your Windows 8 machine with no delays or requests for confirmation.&#160; Any problems with your shortcut will probably open Windows Explorer and bring you to the folder that the shortcut is in.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t tested it yet, but you probably can do the same for a Restart tile by using a shortcut to <em>C:windowssystem32shutdown \/r \/t 0.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you do want the official way to shutdown\/restart\/Sleep, then bring up the Charms bar, hit Settings, and touch Power.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:1d458f4d-6785-4fa7-9767-8f913f5b3fbe\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+8\" rel=\"tag\">Windows 8<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bit of an annoyance in the Windows 8 Developer Preview release is the lack of a quick shutdown tile.&#160; Yes, you can go to command prompt and run the shutdown command but that\u2019s not exactly user friendly.
