{"id":11149,"date":"2011-04-05T19:24:42","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T19:24:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11149"},"modified":"2011-04-05T19:24:42","modified_gmt":"2011-04-05T19:24:42","slug":"sharepoint-and-dynamic-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11149","title":{"rendered":"SharePoint and Dynamic Memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So far today, I\u2019ve covered <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11141\" target=\"_blank\">Exchange<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11139\" target=\"_blank\">SQL<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11144\" target=\"_blank\">Lync<\/a> support statements for Dynamic Memory.&#160; This post is going to focus on SharePoint.&#160; What is the news?<\/p>\n<p>I have searched high and low using Google and Bing.&#160; I have checked the guidance, including designing <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/ff607864.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">SharePoint 2010 for virtualisation on TechNet<\/a>, and I have not found any mention of Dynamic Memory.&#160; Let\u2019s assume that SharePoint does support Dynamic Memory \u2013 unless you do have an abundance of support calls with CSS or Premier and can get an answer (please do share!).<\/p>\n<p>Two things stand out:<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>SQL<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The key to performance of SharePoint appears, to me, to be SQL Server.&#160; We already know the <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11139\" target=\"_blank\">story for SQL and Dynamic Memory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Sizing<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sizing guidance for SP 2010 is quite realistic.&#160; There\u2019s a lot of \u201cit depends\u201d and talk of user acceptance testing.&#160; In Ireland we call it \u201csuck it and see\u201d.&#160; In other words, you won\u2019t know what\u2019s the right sizing for your environment until you try it.&#160; Memory guidance uses the word \u201cestimated\u201d quite a bit.&#160; Based on my previous experience with SharePoint (which is limited, I admit), MS sizing tends to be for huge user bases and not those that most of us deal with.&#160; I remember a \u201csmall\u201d SP 2003 farm from an MS Press book being 10,000 users.&#160; I was sizing for 800 at the time, and MS Ireland considered us to be an enterprise customer!&#160; <\/p>\n<p>You will need flexibility.&#160; That leaves me thinking that SharePoint is the perfect candidate for Dynamic Memory.&#160; You will have to estimate that maximum memory, and the hypervisor will take care of assigning only what is required.&#160; Later on (after monitoring) you can decide to reduce or increase the maximum memory setting.<\/p>\n<p>I will update this post if I hear anything definitive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So far today, I\u2019ve covered Exchange, SQL, and Lync support statements for Dynamic Memory.&#160; This post is going to focus on SharePoint.&#160; What is the news?
