{"id":11030,"date":"2011-01-18T13:39:37","date_gmt":"2011-01-18T13:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11030"},"modified":"2011-01-18T13:39:37","modified_gmt":"2011-01-18T13:39:37","slug":"opalis-how-something-isnt-finished-until-its-documented","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=11030","title":{"rendered":"Opalis &#038; How Something Isn\u2019t Finished Until It\u2019s Documented"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I mentioned in a blog post last night that I started out my career as a dev (eek!).&#160; One of the things that was drilled into us in college was that something was not finished until it was documented.<\/p>\n<p>I recently tried to get System Center Opalis up an running in a lab.&#160; The newest release, 6.3, added support for Windows Server 2008 R2 so I thought I\u2019d fire it up in a lab.&#160; It did not go well.<\/p>\n<p>It appears (assuming I understood the v6.3 documentation correctly) that you install v6.3 by installing v6.2 and hacking it with some files from the 6.3 zip file.&#160; OK!&#160; You then install two types of agent.&#160; One coordinates tasks that run on various machines, and another runs the tasks on those various machines.&#160; The management agent deployed OK.&#160; But the other one \u2026 all I could get was a useless error telling me that it failed to install.&#160; No codes, nothing to check, etc.&#160; I did the usuals like very domain admin rights, and disabling firewalls but still no joy.&#160; I checked online and there was nothing to help.&#160; Seeing as it was just a lab that I was trying to do something quickly on, I didn\u2019t bother hitting the TechNet forums.<\/p>\n<p>And there-in lies the problem.&#160; I know that most customers don\u2019t search too hard for solutions.&#160; If they try something, and it doesn\u2019t do the basics cleanly, then it\u2019s on to the next alternative.<\/p>\n<p>To me, Opalis is an unfinished product.&#160; And that\u2019s a pity.&#160; Because the idea of Opalis is pretty damned good.&#160; But it fails at the final hurdle.&#160; I wonder if this is why there\u2019s lots of talk about the MS acquisition of the Novel PlateSpin resources?&#160; Opalis is so un-MS-like as a product.&#160; It\u2019s like MOM 2000 \u2026 nice idea but maybe some of us will wait until the recently added Microsoft logo actually means something more than IP ownership.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, here\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/charlesjoy\/archive\/2011\/01\/07\/installing-opalis-integration-server-6-3-video-tutorial.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">step-by-step video<\/a> for Opalis.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:208bf5e3-7a65-45b9-8b9c-b24d280c6584\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/System+Center\" rel=\"tag\">System Center<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Opalis\" rel=\"tag\">Opalis<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I mentioned in a blog post last night that I started out my career as a dev (eek!).&#160; One of the things that was drilled into us in college was that something was not finished until it was documented.
