{"id":10962,"date":"2010-11-22T18:08:00","date_gmt":"2010-11-22T18:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10962"},"modified":"2010-11-22T18:08:00","modified_gmt":"2010-11-22T18:08:00","slug":"hp-p4000-lefthand-saniq-9-0-adds-csv-hardware-vss-provider-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10962","title":{"rendered":"HP P4000 LeftHand SAN\/iQ 9.0 Adds CSV Hardware VSS Provider Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may know that HP and Microsoft have formed a virtualisation alliance around Hyper-V.\u00a0 One of HP\u2019s key pieces in the puzzle the the iSCSI SAN formerly known as LeftHand, the P4000 series.<\/p>\n<p>Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) can be backed up using a software VSS provider (i.e. Windows VSS) but this is slow.\u00a0 When using DPM 2010, it\u2019s recommended to use serialised backups.\u00a0 If your hardware vendor support it, you can use their hardware VSS provider to take a snapshot in the SAN and then DPM (or whatever backup product) will use that feature for the backup.<\/p>\n<p>Now back to the P4000.\u00a0 Up until recently, the HP supplied DSM for MPIO was version 8.5.\u00a0 The SAN\/iQ software on the P4000 was also at 8.5.\u00a0 Lots of people were using the 8.5 hardware VSS provider in the SAN to backup CSVs.\u00a0 It seems that this was unsupported. by HP (nothing to do with MS).\u00a0 In fact, it can even cause disk deadlock in a Hyper-V cluster, and lead to 0x0000009E blue screens of death (BSOD) on cluster hosts.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just the start of it!<\/p>\n<p>HP did <a href=\"https:\/\/h20392.www2.hp.com\/portal\/swdepot\/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=P4000SW\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a> DSM 9.0 and SAN\/iQ 9.0 recently for the P4000.\u00a0 These add support for using the hardware VSS provider for backing up a CSV.<\/p>\n<p>EDIT #1<\/p>\n<p>So the SAN\/iQ 9.0 release docs say that previous versions of SAN\/iQ supported CSVs.\u00a0 However, the Application Snashot Feature (hardware VSS provider\/backup application) of the 8.5 release could not support quiecsed snapshots of CSVs.\u00a0 In other words, it wasn&#8217;t supported to use DPM (or anything else) to perform a storage\/host level backup of LeftHand with SAN\/iQ 8.5 using the HP hardware VSS provider.\u00a0 It is supported with v9.0.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:8d1f3b84-5da6-4b1a-8c38-2c24d9f523d4\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/HP\">HP<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/System+Center\">System Center<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/DPM\">DPM<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Backup\">Backup<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\">Virtualisation<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Windows+Server+2008+R2\">Windows Server 2008 R2<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may know that HP and Microsoft have formed a virtualisation alliance around Hyper-V.\u00a0 One of HP\u2019s key pieces in the puzzle the the iSCSI SAN formerly known as LeftHand, the P4000 series.
