Microsoft released a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/downloads\/details.aspx?displaylang=en&amp;FamilyID=21314253-7698-42b3-b4ba-1c5bbc0c9b1f&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MicrosoftDownloadCenter+%28Microsoft+Download+Center%29#tm\" target=\"_blank\">brochure<\/a> for Data Protection Manager 2010 and how to use it to backup Hyper-V.&#160; Here\u2019s the readers digest version:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can install an agent in the VM, like you would with a physical box.&#160; That\u2019s a good idea for selective backup of things like SharePoint, SQL, Exchange, etc, where you want to do granular backup\/recovery of applications.<\/li>\n<li>You should backup at the <em>storage <\/em>level.&#160; Don\u2019t think of it as the host level.<\/li>\n<li>For non-clustered hosts, you install an agent on the host and it backs up at the storage level using VSS.<\/li>\n<li>For a cluster, you use a storage VSS provider (choose your storage wisely) and it backs up the CSV(s) using VSS \u2026 that triggers VSS in the VM\u2019s and the VSS writers in the VM\u2019s guest operating system for a nice clean backup.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s best to install DPM 2010 on a physical box.&#160; This means you can enable the Hyper-V role.&#160; This reveals DLLs that allow DPM to access the contents of a protected VHD and perform item level recovery from it.<\/li>\n<li>Only use passthrough disks for DPM storage if you install it on a VM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px;
