{"id":10739,"date":"2010-07-30T12:18:31","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T12:18:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10739"},"modified":"2010-07-30T12:18:31","modified_gmt":"2010-07-30T12:18:31","slug":"burton-group-versus-hyper-v","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10739","title":{"rendered":"Burton Group Versus Hyper-V"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning I read an article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/community\/node\/64332\" target=\"_blank\">Network World<\/a> that I thought I\u2019d write about.&#160; It reported a claim by the Burton Group (yes; them again) where it was claimed that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You should virtualise Exchange<\/li>\n<li>You should not use Hyper-V to do it: because it does not have ordered virtual machine start-ups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s take these two, one at a time.<\/p>\n<h4>Virtualise Exchange<\/h4>\n<p>You can imagine that I\u2019m all for virtualising as much as is reasonable.&#160; A recommendation to virtualise Exchange always needs to come with a disclaimer.&#160; You know this already if you\u2019re a regular reader: Microsoft does not support highly available Exchange databases on <em>any<\/em> highly available virtualisation platform.&#160; That means no Exchange 2007 CCR on VMware HA\/DRS\/VMotion.&#160; No Exchange 2010 DAGs on XenServer clusters.&#160; It doesn\u2019t matter what virtualisation product you use; you cannot mix Exchange clustering in virtual machines with virtualisation clustering.&#160; I\u2019ve already flogged this one so I\u2019ll quit now.<\/p>\n<h4>Ordered Virtual Machine Start-up<\/h4>\n<p>This is the Burton Group\u2019s answer to Charlton Heston\u2019s corpse gripping his six-shooter (oh yes; I did go there!).&#160; This is a tiny thing and the difference between what they prefer (in VMware) to what Hyper-V has is tiny.&#160; The Burton Group\u2019s preferred ordering mechanism for VM\u2019s would be:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>VM1 starts up<\/li>\n<li>Wait for VM1, then start VM2 and VM3<\/li>\n<li>Wait for \u2026. etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Microsoft went a different way.&#160; You can specify (in seconds) how long a virtual machine should wait before starting up after a host powers up.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s my thinking: The Burton Group would like you to avoid the virtualisation solution that can <em>really <\/em>change how IT works and go with something else because of one tiny feature.&#160; Huh!&#160; I love how great IT experts take care of their customers and readers ;-)&#160; Hyper-V is not the complete solution.&#160; It\u2019s the facilitator for Dynamic IT and for Optimised IT.&#160; System Center are the agents that make use of Hyper-V.&#160; You can change how you deploy servers and applications.&#160; You can change how you monitor them.&#160; You can change how you back up your business.&#160; You can change how you present user applications to the business.&#160; You can do all of this from an integrated management solution that manages Hyper-V and your physical infrastructure.&#160; So \u2026. get all that versus pay between 2 and 5 times more for a virtualization solution with the ability to start up VM\u2019s in a specific order.&#160; I know which enterprise ready solution I\u2019d go for.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:cd3d180b-1aff-4963-9328-4ca53a042e8a\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\" rel=\"tag\">Virtualisation<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/System+Center\" rel=\"tag\">System Center<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\" rel=\"tag\">Hyper-V<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning I read an article on Network World that I thought I\u2019d write about.&#160; It reported a claim by the Burton Group (yes; them again) where it was claimed that: You should virtualise Exchange You should not use Hyper-V to do it: because it does not have ordered virtual machine start-ups.
