{"id":10631,"date":"2010-05-28T17:01:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T17:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10631"},"modified":"2010-05-28T17:01:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-28T17:01:00","slug":"choosing-a-hardware-manufacturer-for-hyper-v","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10631","title":{"rendered":"Choosing a Hardware Manufacturer for Hyper-V"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to choosing a manufacturer there\u2019s a few factors to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience with their hardware?<\/li>\n<li>Do they have suitable servers and\/or storage?<\/li>\n<li>Do they have hardware monitoring management packs?<\/li>\n<li>Do they have PRO tips management packs?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A big reason we choose Hyper-V for hardware virtualization is System Center.&#160; That\u2019s why two of those points focus on System Center.&#160; I\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10404\">previously talked about server hardware monitoring<\/a> for IBM, Fujitsu, HP and Dell.&#160; I\u2019ve no experience with the Fujitsu stuff so I cannot rate it.&#160; But that doesn\u2019t stop me from ranking IBM as last in this category, based on my experience.&#160; Dell and HP both do a great job in this category.&#160; But that\u2019s just the servers.&#160; You should make sure your storage and networking solutions also have OpsMgr health and performance management packs.<\/p>\n<p>One of the coolest aspects of Hyper-V\/System Center is Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO).&#160; PRO management packs can detect failures or performance issues in OpsMgr managed resources in your Hyper-V infrastructure.&#160; That alert is passed on to Virtual Machine Manager.&#160; VMM then takes an action, i.e. Live Migrate a VM, based on that failure.&#160; For example, a NIC might fail in a host server.&#160; Failover Clustering will not react to this but PRO will.&#160; VM\u2019s might be offline because of this so the VM\u2019s are moved to the most suitable host for each workload.&#160; This all means using a Hyper-V cluster.<\/p>\n<p>You can find a listing of PRO management packs on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/systemcenter\/en\/us\/virtual-machine-manager\/vmm-pro-partners.aspx\">Microsoft site<\/a>.&#160; It\u2019s an interesting list, including Dell, HP and IBM.&#160; Storage components such as QLogic and Emulex (HBA\u2019s) are there.&#160; NetApp have a PRO pack.&#160; Veeam even have one for VMM managed VMware environments \u2013 it seems like you might be able to bring PRO to vSphere!<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s what I\u2019d do.&#160; Start off by making sure there is an OpsMgr management pack for the hardware.&#160; This really should be a free download from the manufacturer.&#160; Then make sure the components you are going to be relying on for Hyper-V performance have PRO packs.&#160; That\u2019ll allow you to build a management system that builds in intelligence and automation into your virtualization <em>and<\/em> hardware.&#160; You will really be able to change how you do IT; using accurate information to always make the best decisions, even when you\u2019re asleep in bed!<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:aaf47aaa-a81d-4e78-943b-0d4d2d4bef2e\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\" rel=\"tag\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Virtualisation\" rel=\"tag\">Virtualisation<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/System+Center\" rel=\"tag\">System Center<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to choosing a manufacturer there\u2019s a few factors to consider: Experience with their hardware?
