{"id":10603,"date":"2010-05-19T10:39:53","date_gmt":"2010-05-19T10:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10603"},"modified":"2010-05-19T10:39:53","modified_gmt":"2010-05-19T10:39:53","slug":"the-lab-for-the-latest-chapter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10603","title":{"rendered":"The Lab for the Latest Chapter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mastering-Hyper-V-Deployment-Aidan-Finn\/dp\/0470876530%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIJ5WNI7ZSH7W4OXA%26tag%3Dafm0c-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0470876530\">Mastering Hyper-V Deployment<\/a> book covers enterprise Hyper-V deployments (and we have stuff for the smaller guys too).\u00a0 That means dealing with all the possible environments that you can encounter.\u00a0 Building the lab for that in my house was a challenge \u2013 I don\u2019t have an enterprise budget so I cannot splurge on servers as required.\u00a0 Appropriately, virtualization is being leaned on quite heavily.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what the lab looks like:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/image_thumb.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"604\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the heart of it all is my Hyper-V laptop.\u00a0 I\u2019m running a different eSATA drive caddy than my usual demo one for these labs.\u00a0 The virtual machines won\u2019t fit on it so they are on a large USB 2.0 drive which I had sitting on a shelf.\u00a0 There is a mix of Wired and Wifi networking.\u00a0 My house isn\u2019t CAT wired and I use wifi.\u00a0 The VMware ESX host won\u2019t do wifi so I\u2019m using wired networking between it and the Hyper-V host where vCenter and VMM virtual machines are running.\u00a0 The Hyper-V laptop is also the Hyper-V server in the labs.<\/p>\n<p>Everything works pretty well.\u00a0 The only downside is moving large files across wifi which is very slow\u2026 but that gives me a chance to take a break or get <em>some<\/em> sleep at night.<\/p>\n<p>I work from my writing laptop.\u00a0 From there I can RDP onto any of the Windows machines that are on the wifi network (no routing enabled on the Hyper-V host) or alternatively use Hyper-V\/VMM\/vCenter connections to get on any of the VM\u2019s.\u00a0 I can grab my screen shots, save them on the laptop and write away until the wee hours of the morning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:ed8f7fa1-7616-4b34-ae95-a25071740181\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0px;
