I\u2019m tuning into the live webcast<\/a> of today\u2019s (there\u2019s another tomorrow) Microsoft Management Summit 2010 keynote featuring server management.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be doing my best to blog about new stuff as it happens.<\/p>\n

System Center Service Manager 2010 is announced as RTM.\u00a0 Sorry dudes!\u00a0 YEARS of work (and rework) and I thought you\u2019d get more of a launch than that.<\/p>\n

Jeez, an hour later and I\u2019ve not got much more to report.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of talk about cloud (nothing new) and a lot of talk about old concepts (using System Center to do more, and more engineering rather than operations).<\/p>\n

EDIT: Someone on Twitter counted the number of times “cloud” was mentioned.\u00a0 The final count was 83.\u00a0 Cloud OD.<\/p>\n

The next generation of System Center data center is based on lessons from Azure and Bing.\u00a0 Edwin Yuen hits the stage.\u00a0 Now we\u2019re cooking!<\/p>\n

VMM v.Next <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It looks quite different!\u00a0 It has the cleaner v.Next interface rather than the Outlook 2007 one we are used to.\u00a0 Server application virtualization, SQL models and MSDeploy (IIS) packages live in the library.\u00a0 The template model is evolved to a service template spanning multiple servers or tiers.\u00a0 We see a demo of a 3 tier application.\u00a0 You can drop OS templates (that we know) and \u201cServer App-V\u201d\/MSDeploy packages which we can drop into the model.\u00a0 You can say that you want X numbers of server in a tier in the model.\u00a0 You can tier your storage to standard or high performance.\u00a0 So you\u2019ve got X variations of servers made from a few Server App-V images and OS templates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Seriously \u2013 I could use this right now.\u00a0 I have recurring deployments that I could model like this.<\/p>\n

You can integrate with WSUS and perform a patching compliance report based on the VHD in the library!\u00a0 You can then remediate this image in the library.\u00a0 Now \u2013 VMM knows which VMM managed VM\u2019s need to be updated!\u00a0 You don\u2019t need to patch the running VM OS.\u00a0\u00a0 You can <Update Service>, to replace the running OS, while keeping the Server App-V package.<\/p>\n

Operations Manager & Azure<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How you can monitor Azure and on-premises for seamless application monitoring using OpsMgr 2007 R2.\u00a0 We see a distributed application containing traditional monitored items (including databases and web watchers) and an Azure presence.\u00a0 OpsMgr integrates into Azure using a soon-to-be-released (\u201clater this year sometime\u201d) management pack to gather performance information.\u00a0 A task is there to add new web role instances in Azure.\u00a0 Nice and simple!\u00a0<\/p>\n

Deployment of more Azure instances is based on real (synthetic transaction monitoring) measured performance data.\u00a0 Expansion (or withdrawal) of new instances can be easily done through the same monitoring interface based in your site.<\/p>\n
