{"id":10456,"date":"2010-02-28T12:33:21","date_gmt":"2010-02-28T12:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10456"},"modified":"2010-02-28T12:33:21","modified_gmt":"2010-02-28T12:33:21","slug":"technet-wiki","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10456","title":{"rendered":"TechNet Wiki"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s no doubt of a few things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some people have found Microsoft documentation to be a bit lacking, and sometimes a bit late.\u00a0 For example, we only recently got clear guidance on networking configuration for Live Migration. I\u2019ve had people contact me who were very confused on different subjects because they\u2019ve only had closely related blog posts to work on, not specific ones.\u00a0 And that\u2019s just with one \u201csmall\u201d subject.<\/li>\n<li>The power of the community on the Internet is impressive.\u00a0 Wikipedia has become a huge source of information, even if that information has to be verified against other sources.\u00a0 The same goes for blogs.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft TechNet should be one of the first port of calls for IT pros when referencing technical articles on Microsoft infrastructure.\u00a0 But lets face it, it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 That might be because of poor searchability, poor\/confusing writing or incomplete\/missing articles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So Microsoft is going to try something.\u00a0 It is a bit of a leap of faith.\u00a0 Microsoft TechNet is going to launch a wiki.\u00a0 I think there\u2019s some excitement about this dabbling with the community in Redmond.\u00a0 The idea is that you, me, or anyone else, can contribute or edit content on this wiki.\u00a0 It should be documentation about products, solutions, fixes, architecture, etc.\u00a0 It will be up to the community at large to maintain the content for the community.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying MS might not edit it for legal reasons, etc, but in the end it will be down to ordinary people to manage.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously some MVP\u2019s and other assorted nutters will be big writers (not me \u2026 doing this blog, my day job and a few projects that are starting up will keep me busy).\u00a0 But there\u2019s nothing to stop you from adding content and editing.<\/p>\n<p>As it is community content you cannot rely on it solely.\u00a0 I would recommend trying to verify any statements made on it against other sources.\u00a0 However, it should quickly become a huge repository of information, making it a great jumping off point on any search.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s Keith Combs talks about the new TechNet Wiki on his <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/keithcombs\/archive\/2010\/02\/23\/technet-2-0-episode-6-wiki.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">blog<\/a>.\u00a0 Keith says that it will launch later this year.\u00a0 As he says at the end, the success or failure of this service will depend on the community, not Microsoft.\u00a0 Will it succeed?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know, but I\u2019m sure that people in Redmond are taking it seriously.\u00a0 It\u2019s a subject worth keeping an eye on.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:3dd3980c-f30b-4d5d-8aca-1ac905c3a691\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s no doubt of a few things: Some people have found Microsoft documentation to be a bit lacking, and sometimes a bit late.\u00a0 For example, we only recently got clear guidance on networking configuration for Live Migration.
