{"id":10445,"date":"2010-02-25T18:16:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-25T18:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10445"},"modified":"2010-02-25T18:16:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-25T18:16:00","slug":"crazy-idea-use-vmware-for-hyper-v-p2v-of-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10445","title":{"rendered":"Crazy Idea \u2013 Use VMware for Hyper-V P2V of Linux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10167\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> a while back about how to P2V convert a physical Linux machine to a Hyper-V virtual machine.\u00a0 I really only looked at nasty complicated solutions that required knowing Linux.\u00a0 You can <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10344\" target=\"_blank\">P2V Windows machines using Virtual Machine Manager<\/a> but not Linux machines.<\/p>\n<p>Some conversations last week at the summit revealed an alternative that I really should have thought of.\u00a0 It\u2019s not NDA stuff.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the free <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/converter\/\" target=\"_blank\">VMware vCenter Converter<\/a> to P2V a Linux VM.\u00a0 That creates a VMware VM with a VMDK disk file.\u00a0 The downside is that it appears that the target must be VMware ESX, ESXi, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Workstation or Player<\/span> (See below comment).<\/p>\n<p>Now, you can use a tool to convert the VMDK to a Microsoft VHD disk file, e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/vmtoolkit.com\/files\/folders\/converters\/entry8.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">VMDK2VHD<\/a>.\u00a0 Now you have a disk you can attach to a Hyper-V VM and boot from.\u00a0 You can then install your integration components which are supported on RHEL and SLES.\u00a0 They\u2019ll install on other distros but are not MS supported.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that\u2019s the theory.\u00a0 I\u2019ve not tried this.\u00a0 It feels like it\u2019ll work.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame that a Linux tool has to be used for this.\u00a0 It\u2019ll look bad for a MS partner consultant who has sold a client on the idea of Microsoft virtualisation to break out a VMware tool for a P2V of Linux VM\u2019s.\u00a0 Sure, they\u2019ll be the majority of VM\u2019s but there\u2019s still a good number of them out there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:6496654f-d9ca-43af-9d31-a5bdd6ed8394\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\" style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\">Technorati Tags: <a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/System+Center\">System Center<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/VMM\">VMM<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a rel=\"tag\" href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Linux\">Linux<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I posted a while back about how to P2V convert a physical Linux machine to a Hyper-V virtual machine.\u00a0 I really only looked at nasty complicated solutions that required knowing Linux.\u00a0 You can P2V Windows machines using Virtual Machine Manager but not Linux machines.
