{"id":10396,"date":"2010-02-11T15:53:55","date_gmt":"2010-02-11T15:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10396"},"modified":"2010-02-11T15:53:55","modified_gmt":"2010-02-11T15:53:55","slug":"microsoft-ireland-partner-event-virtualisation-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10396","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Ireland Partner Event: Virtualisation &#038; Management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a follow on from my <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10393\" target=\"_blank\">post earlier today on the 2010 Microsoft Ireland Partner event<\/a>.\u00a0 This post will focus on the virtualisation track.<\/p>\n<p>Ronan Geraghty (owner of the Server business in Ireland, former DPE) introduces the session.\u00a0 Wilbour Craddock (partner technical sales) takes over to talk about Windows Server 2008 R2.<\/p>\n<p>The story for Windows Server 2008 R2 is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Streamlined management<\/li>\n<li>Robust web platform<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBetter Together\u201d with Windows 7<\/li>\n<li>Virtualisation with Hyper-V<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s an evolution of Windows Server 2008, not an entirely new operating system.\u00a0 However, there is <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/dd391932(WS.10).aspx\" target=\"_blank\">a lot more stuff in there<\/a>.\u00a0 Read the stuff on that link; it\u2019ll save me typing a bunch of stuff.<\/p>\n<p>The key to the MS platform is System Center. OpsMgr for fault\/performance\/audit collection, VMM for virtualisation, DPM for backup and ConfigMgr for deployment, auditing and reporting.\u00a0 Service Desk will be a complete helpdesk solution implementing MOF\/ITIL.<\/p>\n<p>Liam Cronin (Compete Lead) takes over to talk about the compete message.\u00a0 MS Ireland is big on competing with VMware.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">VMware<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Strategy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>100% of Fortune 100 and 96% of Fortune 1000<\/li>\n<li>Win the desktop through VDI<\/li>\n<li>Win the cloud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Evolution:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rich virtualisation portfolio<\/li>\n<li>Acquiring a lot of technology through company take over<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Partners:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>700+ tech partners<\/li>\n<li>65% of partner revenue through OEM\u2019s<\/li>\n<li>Rich virtual appliance market<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">MS Differentiators<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MS is a platform company.\u00a0 VMware is a product company, not a platform one.<\/li>\n<li>MS is competitive with Windows Server 2008 R2 \u2013 claims by Liam that MS is ahead on features \u2026 I\u2019m as pro Hyper-V as it gets and I disagree.\u00a0 MS has the core stuff and it works excellently but does not have the same set of features as VMware.<\/li>\n<li>MS is more cost effective<\/li>\n<li>Management &amp; security (very true)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why pay a \u201cvTax\u201d to VMware when virtualisation is built into Windows?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Objection Handling<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Made a commitment to VMware already: Don\u2019t need to rip\/replace.\u00a0 You can use System Center to manage, maybe use Hyper-V for newer stuff.\u00a0 The virtualisation platform isn\u2019t as important as the management of it.<\/p>\n<p>4 questions to ask VMware customers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why does VMware have a mandatory support contract that doesn\u2019t include upgrades?<\/li>\n<li>Why do they have to pay more money for VMotion?\u00a0 Live Migration is in the free Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.<\/li>\n<li>How does VMware provide management for operating systems and applications running on their hypervisor?<\/li>\n<li>Ask VMware what their virtualised desktop solution is for roaming or remote users who are disconnected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Citrix V-Alliance<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Matthew Brenchley &#8211; Strategic Alliances Manager from the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Citrix has 21 years of partnership with Microsoft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Essentials For Hyper-V<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OK \u2013 I want a Citrix person to say exactly what this is.\u00a0 I have yet to see a clear explanation.\u00a0 Where is the comic book store guy when you need him \u2026. oh \u2026 \u201cWorst Marketing Ever\u201d.\u00a0 We get the pitch on VDI and how Citrix can work on the MS platform.\u00a0 Not much meat on these bones; the trend continues unfortunately.\u00a0 I guess I\u2019ll have to wait until PubForum to hear technical information on the Citrix side of things.<\/p>\n<p>Over to marketing person, Karen Reilly.\u00a0 This is a pitch for recruiting members into the V-Alliance.\u00a0 Focus appears to be on desktop virtualisation.\u00a0 Lead generation support and POC funding.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad I have guest wifi access.\u00a0 Seriously, VDI is an expensive model and is a very niche solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Afterwards<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I chat with Will and he tells me what Citrix Essentials is about.\u00a0 (a) It allows block level and de-duplicated replication of VM\u2019s between sites.\u00a0 You can use different storage systems that don\u2019t have replication engines and you do not need dark fibre \u2013 unlike controller based replication systems (b) It provides a lab\/development deployment solution where the MS solution is purely developer driven in Visual Studio 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a follow on from my post earlier today on the 2010 Microsoft Ireland Partner event.\u00a0 This post will focus on the virtualisation track.
