{"id":10169,"date":"2009-12-02T10:42:55","date_gmt":"2009-12-02T10:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10169"},"modified":"2009-12-02T10:42:55","modified_gmt":"2009-12-02T10:42:55","slug":"microsoft-responds-to-black-screen-of-death-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10169","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Responds to Black Screen of Death Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was widely <a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10151\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that a UK company was claiming that one of last weeks security updates by Microsoft was causing a \u201cblack screen of death\u201d where Explorer would show nothing when you logged in.&#160; Microsoft <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/msrc\/archive\/2009\/12\/01\/reports-of-issues-with-november-security-updates.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">responded<\/a> overnight:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhile these reports weren\u2019t brought to us directly, from our research into them, it appears they\u2019re saying that our security updates are making permission changes in the registry to the value for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogonShell&#160; key. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We\u2019ve conducted a comprehensive review of the November Security Updates, the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the non-security updates we released through Windows Update in November. That investigation has shown that none of these updates make any changes to the permissions in the registry. Thus, we don\u2019t believe the updates are related to the \u201cblack screen\u201d behavior described in these reports. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We\u2019ve also checked with our worldwide Customer Service and Support organization, and they\u2019ve told us they\u2019re not seeing \u201cblack screen\u201d behavior as a broad customer issue.
