{"id":10118,"date":"2009-11-30T19:55:27","date_gmt":"2009-11-30T19:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10118"},"modified":"2009-11-30T19:55:27","modified_gmt":"2009-11-30T19:55:27","slug":"adding-a-node-to-a-vmm-managed-hyper-v-cluster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10118","title":{"rendered":"Adding a Node To A VMM Managed Hyper-V Cluster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve just gone through this process so I thought I\u2019d document what I did:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a test VM ready and running on the cluster.&#160; You\u2019ll be moving it around to\/from the new node. Don\u2019t use a production machine in case something doesn\u2019t work. <\/li>\n<li>Built the new node.&#160; Set up hardware, drivers and patches, making sure the machine was identical to the other nodes in the cluster.&#160; I mean <em>identical<\/em>. <\/li>\n<li>Enable Hyper-V role and Failover Clustering feature. <\/li>\n<li>Configure the virtual networks to be identical as the other nodes \u2013 VMM won\u2019t do this in the \u201cadd\u201d step and we know it messes up the configuration of External networks. <\/li>\n<li>Used the SAN manager to present all cluster disks to the new node. <\/li>\n<li>Put the cluster, Hyper-V cluster nodes and VMM server into maintenance mode in OpsMgr. <\/li>\n<li>Add the new node to the cluster in Failover Clustering.&#160; Modified the cluster quorum settings to be recommended. <\/li>\n<li>Refreshed the cluster in VMM 2008 R2.&#160; Waited for the new node to appear under the cluster in a pending state. <\/li>\n<li>Right-clicked on the new pending node and selected Add Node To Cluster.&#160; Entered administrator credentials (good for all nodes in the cluster).&#160; VMM ran a job to deploy the VMM agent. <\/li>\n<li>If everything is good and matches up (watch out for virtual networks) then you won\u2019t see the dreaded \u201cUnsupported Cluster Configuration\u201d error. <\/li>\n<li>Move that test VM around from the new node to all the other nodes and back again using Live Migration. <\/li>\n<li>Re-run the validation tests against your cluster ASAP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All should be well at this point.&#160; If so, deploy your OpsMgr agent and take the OpsMgr agents out of maintenance mode.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px\" id=\"scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:41fe0168-ff22-479a-9f1e-8fe420c9072a\" class=\"wlWriterEditableSmartContent\">Technorati Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Live+Migration\" rel=\"tag\">Live Migration<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/Hyper-V\" rel=\"tag\">Hyper-V<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/technorati.com\/tags\/VMM+2008+R2\" rel=\"tag\">VMM 2008 R2<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve just gone through this process so I thought I\u2019d document what I did: Have a test VM ready and running on the cluster.&#160; You\u2019ll be moving it around to\/from the new node.
