{"id":10079,"date":"2009-11-27T18:41:36","date_gmt":"2009-11-27T18:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/index.php\/2009\/11\/w2008-r2-hyper-v-memory-more-efficient\/"},"modified":"2009-11-27T18:41:36","modified_gmt":"2009-11-27T18:41:36","slug":"w2008-r2-hyper-v-memory-more-efficient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/?p=10079","title":{"rendered":"W2008 R2 Hyper-V Memory More Efficient"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m seeing the real world results of this.&#160; We\u2019re getting a little bit more out of the gigabytes of RAM that is in each of our hosts with Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V instead of its predecessor, even with our hardware which does not have the very latest processor.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main players in saving RAM on Hyper-V hosts with newer hardware will be SLAT or Second Level Address Translation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/image4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/aidanfinn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/image_thumb4.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a> In Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V the parent partition (host operating system) is responsible for mapping the physical memory in the host with the memory that is running in the virtual machine.&#160; Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V removes that middle layer of management by offloading the responsibility to dedicated functions in the CPU.<\/p>\n<p>CPU\u2019s that have Intel\u2019s Extended Page Tables (EPT) or AMD\u2019s Nested Page Tables (NPT) or (Rapid Virtualization Indexing (RVI) have the ability to by delegated this responsibility.&#160; This gets rid of the \u201cshadow table\u201d that the parent partition otherwise had to use \u2026 which was also consuming RAM.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s estimated that you will save 1MB of RAM per VM (there is an overhead of RAM for every VM and GB RAM in that VM) and there is also a small saving in CPU time required.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m seeing the real world results of this.&#160; We\u2019re getting a little bit more out of the gigabytes of RAM that is in each of our hosts with Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V instead of its predecessor, even with our hardware which does not have the very latest processor.
